Little bit about Wasgamuwa National Park

Located in Matale, Polonnaruwa District of Sri Lanka, Wasgamuwa National Park is a wildlife lover’s dream. Large herds of Elephants can be found in this National Park. Wasgamuwa is well known for its abundant wildlife population and is home of several interesting ancient sites. Wasgamuwa is also known as a gathering place of bears. Most number of bears are said to be found in this particular national park.

Wasgamuwa National Park is a 225 Km drive away from the city of Colombo. It can be travelled via Kandy city. Apart from elephants and bear, this national park is home for most species. Nature lovers would enjoy the park, but for people interested in historical and ancient religious sites and ruins, Wasgamuwa has significant historical importance. Wasgamuwa is a place of interest for hikers too.It has a mountain range about 470m above sea level which is also known as Sudu Kanda.

  • Do not tease the animals
  • No smoking, no liquor
  • Eat at designated rest areas only
  • Do not get down from the Safari Jeeps
  • Bring plenty of water, sun protection creams, sunglasses, caps/hats
  • Always listen to the driver's/ guide's instructions
