Little bit about Udawatte Kele Sanctuary

The tropical rain forest in the centre of Kandy was known as ‘Uda Wasala Watta’ in the earlier times. This forest with a long history dating back centuries was a Royal forest of the Sinhala kings. It was declared a forest reserve in 1856 and as a sanctuary in 1938.

It is popular for its avifauna and is the home for many kinds of animals, reptiles and birds, trees and creepers. This place is the best for bird watching and seeing the animals in their natural habitat. Walking around this forest is definitely an unforgettable experience. Make sure you keep track of your path and don’t forget to take some drinks and snacks to energize between your walks, as there are no shops in the middle and you have to walk back the same way to come out of the forest.
