This is the first stupa to be built after introducing Buddhism to Sri Lanka. It was built during the reigning of King Devamnampiyatissa (247-207 BC), in accordance to the instructions of Mahinda Thero who brought Buddhism to the island in order to enshrine the collarbone of Lord Buddha. The temple was built in a shape of a bell and has undergone renovations number of times by number of kings. The architecture of such a tremendous structure must have been the stunning expression of wood engineering and of the most skillful craftsmanship of ancient times. This ancient building is adorned by a pair of beautiful guard stones that are to be seen at the entrance. Some pillars hold the lotus shaped crown and smooth polished surface.
