Little bit about Thivanka Image House

Built by King Parakramabahu, the large image of Lord Buddha has been curved in 3 places in this image house and this has been given the name ‘thivanka’ that literally means three curves. The Buddha statue at this place was about 8 meters in height, but today part of the big statue above the head has been destroyed. The inner wall of the building is decorated with nicely done frescoes showing the stories on prior births of Buddha before enlightenment.

The most famous scenery painted here is named ‘Sankassa pura wadamaweema’ illustrating an important incident relating to Lord Buddha's life. The two guard stones at the entrance to the building are also equally attractive. This place is being renovated for the past 15 years and it is still on.
