Little bit about Pitawala Pathana

This is a place you should never miss in Sri Lanka! Pitawala Pathana is a paradise of grassy plateaus and breathtaking views, located in Knuckles Forest Reserve.

You can visit there on the way from Matale to Riverston - it's about 6km from the Riverston Tower. A parking area is available and you need to buy an entrance ticket from the entrance office. There's cafetaria with snacks & beverages and washroom facility as well.
Walking to the top through open meadows and sloping expanse of grasslands, you will find the 'Mini World's End' after about 500 meters from the entrance, a great escarpment with astounding views of the whole area.

Sitting on the fenceless cliff itself is an adventurous life-long memory you should take into pictures. During sunny days you can view the whole area without mist, including Sri Lanka's biggest reservoir too in the far away vicinity.

There are two major cliffs, the second one is a bit scary to step in - but it is the iconic place in Pitawala Pathana. The two cliffs are amazingly placed in a way that one could take a picture from the first cliff, of a person sitting on the second - the distance is perfect to take a photo even from a phone cam.

Make sure you only walk in the marked trails so that your presence does not make a slight disruption to the biodiversity of flora and fauna there. Travelers can camp in the premises with the guidance of professional local guides.

Things to know before you go

  • Be cautious when reaching the edge of the cliff in windy days
  • Do not litter even the biodegradable garbage
