Little bit about Pigeon Island
It is known as the 17th national park in Sri Lanka. This national park is situated a kilometer off the coast of Nilaveli. It is also one of the two marine national parks of Sri Lanka. The park contains some of the best remaining coral reefs of Sri Lanka. Pigeon island consists of two islands, big and small. The large island is fringed by a coral reef and is about a 200m long, the small is surrounded by rocky islets. Most of the 100 species of corals and 300 coral reef fishes recorded around Trincomalee are found in the large island of the national park. The island is an important breeding ground for the rock pigeon. The pigeon island, with its powdery white sand and glittering coral gardens tantalizes with possibilities. The shallow reef makes snorkeling and diving easy and satisfying. This is what attracts most of its tourists.
