Little bit about Peradeniya Botanical Garden

The Royal Botanical garden is situated about 5.5 km west of the Kandy city. The colossal garden spread vast to about 147 acres is the home for variety of indigenous trees and plants including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees. The origins of the Botanic Gardens date as far back as 1371 when King Wickramabahu III ascended the throne and kept court at Peradeniya.

The giant plants and sky touching trees in the garden stand evident for its age dating back to 1750s, when this place was declared a preserved garden. River Mahaweli, the longest river in Sri Lanka runs through the botanical garden and the tranquil atmosphere mixed with sounds of nature gives the best mind-relaxing time.

Nearly 2 million tourists visit to admire the beauty of the garden every year.
