Little bit about Lipton’s Seat
The Scottish captain of the tea industry Sir Thomas Lipton used to survey his extending empire from here, and now this place is referred as Lipton’s seat. It is also one of his favorite places to entertain his guests. This is one of the most impressive viewpoints in Sri Lanka and magnificent views of at least 7 provinces can be enjoyed on the top as far as Trincomalee, Baticaloa, Matara, Badulla, Ratnapura and Monaragala.
You have to climb up a path of about 8km surrounded by green tea plantations. The morning view is breathtaking and make sure to take some warm clothes. The road is narrow and a hike to the top takes about 2.5-3 hours. The location is also accessible by a three-wheeler. On the way to the summit, you will get to see the workers, villagers, children - it is the best way to experience the local life.
How to reach Lipton's Seat?
Lipton's Seat is located around 18 km from Haputale and 7km from Dambetenna Tea Factory.
You need to go in Haputale - Dambetanne Road for about 9.5 km to reach the Dambetanne Tea Factory. If you are taking the bus, you need to take 'Dambetanne' Bus from Haputale bus station and get off near Dambetanne Tea Factory.
From Dambetenna Tea Factory, the hike is about 2.5-3 hours. You can take a three-wheeler or go in a four-wheeler to reach the summit. Since the road to the summit is very narrow, after around 8AM, it normally gets conjested. Thus it is advisable to start the journey as early as possible to to go in a three-wheeler or just walk.
Things to know before you go
- Better to start the journey as early as possible with the plan to reach the summit at least around 10AM. Otherwise the area could get misty and you will not be able to see the breath-taking panoramic view
- Not recommended to visit in rainy days
- Lipton’s Seat entrance fee is 50 LKR
