Little bit about Lankaramaya

Lankaramaya is an ancient stupa built in the holy city of Anuradhapura by King Walagamba. A stark white stupa, Lankaramya is surrounded by several concentric stone pillars which have lead archaeologists to believe that at one time, the Lankarama Sthupa may have been surrounded by a “Watadage” which is an ancient form of covering which was built over some sthupa, an architectural and engineering feat unique to ancient Sri Lanka.

Lankarama sthupa is a part of the Atamasthana, 8 hallowed places of worship revered amongst Buddhists world over. The Eth Pokuna (Elephant Pond) is a large man-made pond located near the Lankarama. The water to the pond is supplied by an ancient underground network of waterways from the Periyankulama tank some distance away. It is a truly remarkable feat of structural and irrigation engineering. Lankarama is a must visit the place on any excursion to Anuradhapura.
