Little bit about Kushtaraja Gala Statue
This historical statute can be found down the old Weligama Main Road which goes through the town. A part of the Kushtarajagala Vihara this is larger than life statue carved out of a single piece of solid rock. Believed to be from the 8th century, the origins of this statue is largely unknown. It is said that is an image of a foreign king who suffered from a skin disease to which he had sought treatment from a local doctor. This is however debated and is largely based on folklore than historical documentation. What is impressive, however, is the intricate detailing that can be found on the statue, a true testament to the skills of the ancient Sri Lankan artisans who sculpted these statues from solid rock.
