This wonderful lake was built during the reign of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873. He wanted the damming of the Thalagala stream, which originates from Mount Pidurutalagala in order to make more land available for the expansion of the town. Very attractive water stream was mainly used for sports and other recreational activities. Boat riding in Gregory lake amidst the icy weather is very much enjoyable. The lakeside is covered by colorful flowers and small green plants. In 1913, the water flow of the lake was directed into a tunnel thar flows to a hydro power station at 'Blackpool' between the town and Nanu Oya. The water from this lake is also directed to power stations and supply electricity to the whole town.
