Little bit about Gal Viharaya

The important feature of this temple is the four rock relief statues of the Lord Buddha, which have been carved into the face of a large granite rock. Gal viharaya was built by King Parakramabahu and is about 80ft long. The magnificent statues illustrate the life stories of the Lord Buddha.

The first statue portrays the Lord Buddha while seated on a lotus and doing meditation. Several smaller statues can too be seen in these decorations. The next statue is one that is carved into the rock to represent a story about Lord Buddha visiting the heavens to preach his mother. The third statue is the standing position of Lord Buddha and is believed to be crafted by King Parakramabahu. The last statue is the massive one displaying the scenes of Lord Buddha’s death.

Things to know before you go
