Little bit about Dontra Lighthouse
Dondra lighthouse stands 49 metres high in white elegance, right on the southernmost point of Sri Lanka. Built in 1890 by the Dutch, this is the oldest and tallest lighthouse in the country. This is actively used in navigation even today.
Surrounding of the lighthouse creates a scenic view with the lush natural beauty inland and on the other side, shallow waters with reefs laying underneath. You can get a memorable and panoramic view of the area if you climb up the tower. For that, you need to get permission in advance, from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority head office in Colombo.
Best time of the day to visit here would be evening to enjoy the sunset while embracing soothing winds coming across the Indian Ocean. Needless to say, this quiet paradise will be a perfect relaxation and a feast for the eye.
