Little bit about Baker’s Bend

  •       Distance from Colombo – 168 km
  •       Route Colombo (via Colombo – Badulla main road) > Belihuloya > Nonpareil estate road.
  •       Elevation – 5000 feet above sea level

Located in Belihuloya, near the margin of Central province and Sabaragamuwa Province, one can find the Baker’s Bend on the way to the World’s End trail. It’s absolutely a perfect view point with a 180 turn in the road that you can catch the sight of enchanting mountain ranges of Horton Plains.

How the place got its name has a story connected with a British governor called Samuel Baker who worked on much to create beautiful Nuwara Eliya. One day, in this steep bend, he met with an accident on his horse cart. It made the death of his beloved horse. So in memory of his house, it is believed that he built this bend the shape of a horse shoe.

To reach the Baker’s Bend, you need to get  permission from the Nonpareil estate first. Or else you can follow the shortcuts to the Baker’s Bend with the help of good hearted villagers. We recommend bikes or 4x4 vehicles for the journey because the road is not much repaired.

Once you come to the Baker’s Bend observation deck, fabulous nature views that will fill up you with amazement could never be forgotten. Balathuduwa, Gommolikanda, Adarakanda mountain range from the left, southern plains, Samanala reservoir and Udawalawe reservoirs from the right, and Nagrak division and Horton Plains standing in lush green elegance from behind.

The hike to the Baker’s Bend would be more suitable for experienced hikers. For that you can contact a tour guide from the area.

  • Avoid any false behaviour because Baker’s bend and its premises is a property of Nonpareil Estate (Balangoda Plantations).
